Spring 2010 Assembly Meets at Benedict College
The Spring 2010 Assembly of the SC Conference of AAUP was hosted by the Benedict College chapter on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The meeting was led by Dr. Harry Singleton, President of the State Conference.
President Singleton began with the sad news of the passing of long-time member Tom Hobbs of the University of South Carolina - Aiken chapter. Tom had been a tireless advocate for our Association and its goals, and he will be missed.
The morning discussion centered on budget cuts in higher education and the adverse implications thereof. The group brainstormed ideas to increase awareness and relevance of AAUP both with our 210 members in South Carolina and especially with those additional hundreds of professors who should join AAUP. There was agreement to utilize email and the Conference website as effectively as possible.
Attendees heard about the extreme situation at Clark Atlanta University, where due process was completely trampled, as an object lesson to all. The need for expert legal counsel is such matters was examined.
The meeting included a delicious luncheon and a surprise birthday cake for former State President Jim Henderson of the Coastal Carolina University chapter.
